You might not know this about me, but I am kind of a big deal.
Ok, maybe not any more but at one point I was a big deal.
Ok, so maybe not any more and maybe I was only a big deal in my head at one point and it happened in a small town in Arizona where I grew up in the late 1980’s when I was in high school.
In Flagstaff, Arizona in the 1980’s I played the role of High School Jock – as in too cool for school.
I did what I am sure many guys all over America did – won the biggest games, lifted weights in gym class and dated the cutest girls while trying hard to ignore the homely ones.
So imagine my surprise when one of the homely girls grew up and recently wanted to charge me to be on her real-estate-broker-husband’s preferred vendor list.
You see, sometimes the homely girls grow up and marry guys who end up being real estate brokers.
Good ones.
And when you are a mortgage guy and want to start working with the used-to-be-homely-girls-real-estate-broker-husband, apparently there is a fee associated with it.
Call it a “I should have been nicer to the homely girls” fee if you will.
But it is real.
And many real estate brokers are charging loan officers to be on their preferred vendor list so that they can “refer” the loan officer deals.
Do you think the best loan officers actually end up paying the real estate broker for the privilege of being one of the (many) preferred vendors?
I didn’t.
And I don’t see how any of the best loan officers do either.
It just doesn’t make sense to me how the high-school-superstars-in-their-own-mind end up actually paying the homely girls to be at their beck-and-call.
Not to mention that I can’t see how this all benefits the homeowner.
